7 Configuring Outlook 2002

This page describes how to configure Outlook 2002 to send and receive e-mail through WorkgroupMail.

You can configure Outlook 2002 to send and receive e-mail through WorkgroupMail in the following way:

In Outlook 2002, select Tools | Email Accounts... from the menu. The E-mail Accounts dialog box is displayed.

Select Add a new e-mail account radio button and press Next. The Server Type page is displayed.

Select the POP3 radio button and press Next.

In the Internet E-mail Settings page, enter your name and e-mail address into the User Information section. You must enter the same e-mail address that you entered into the Details page in the WorkgroupMail Setup program. Then, enter the IP address of the computer which runs WorkgroupMail into both the Incoming mail Server (POP3) and Outgoing mail server (SMTP) fields.

In the Logon Information page, you must enter the User Name and password required to authenticate this user with the WorkgroupMail POP3 server. The information that you specify here will enable Outlook to connect to WorkgroupMail in order to receive e-mail. Into the User Name and Password fields you must enter the local account name and password for the user whose mail client you are configuring.

You can find this information by opening the WorkgroupMail administrator program and selecting the relevant user in the left-hand list. In the right-hand window, you will see a value for the Local account name.

Press Next in the E-mail Accounts page. The Finish page is displayed. Press Finish to complete the configuration of Outlook 2002.

If you have Internet Explorer configured to dial up in order to connect to the Internet, then by default, Outlook will automatically try to dial up when you want to send or receive messages. Since Outlook only needs to connect to the WorkgroupMail computer, which is on the local area network, then Outlook should be configured as follows:

  • Select Tools | E-mail Accounts... from the menu in Outlook. The E-mail Accounts property sheet is displayed. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and press Next
  • From the list, select the account that you have just created and press the Change... button. The Property sheet is displayed for the account. Press the More Settings... button.
  • Select the Connection page, tick the Connect using my local area network (LAN) radio button. Then press OK to save your changes.
  • You are now ready to test that the mail client can send and receive e-mail to and from WorkgroupMail.
